New rent control measure

On July 21st, the Tribunal Administratif du Logement (TAL) released a new regulation about section G of the Official Quebec lease.
Landlords are now required to give notice to the new tenants entering a lease of the lowest rent paid, even if the apartment was not leased in the previous 12 months.

Until now, landlords were required to fill section G of the Quebec lease writing the lowest rent paid for the unit in the previous 12 months, and if the unit was empty landlords were not required to indicate the lowest rent paid by the last tenant.
This new obligation requires landlords to inform the new tenant they’re signing a lease with the last rent paid and the date of payment.

The TAL announces that the Official Quebec lease will be modified to integrate this new notice under section G and in the meanwhile, landlords can use the model notice specifically created.

This is another measure to keep rent control effective in Quebec and protect tenants from abusive increases.
